New Delhi, April 15 (NationPress) Pratibha Devisingh Patil, the first female President of India, has conveyed her support to Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam's implementation, labeling it a “transformative milestone in fortifying India's democratic structure”.

Patil, a seasoned Congress leader who held the presidency from 2007 to 2012, made these statements as a Special Session of Parliament is set to commence on April 16. The session is anticipated to deliberate on amendments to the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, 2023, alongside a proposed delimitation bill aimed at ensuring one-third reservation for women in Parliament. Her endorsement arrives concurrently with Sonia Gandhi, Chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party and Rajya Sabha member, criticizing the Bill's timing as an “underhanded tactic”.

In her correspondence to the Prime Minister, Patil expressed, “I sincerely appreciate the historic initiative of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam. This significant constitutional amendment is a transformative move that strengthens India’s democratic framework by enhancing women’s representation in legislative bodies.”

As the nation’s inaugural female President, Patil highlighted that genuine empowerment for women can only be realized by providing them with equal opportunities to shape decisions that affect the nation.

“This amendment transcends a mere legal provision; it stands as a robust declaration of our collective dedication to advancing gender equality, promoting inclusive governance, and cultivating a stronger, more progressive India,” she stated.

The former President underscored that increasing the presence of women in Parliament and State Legislatures will “undoubtedly enrich legislative discussions with varied perspectives, yield more balanced and compassionate policy outcomes, and inspire future generations of women to engage actively in public life.”

“India has consistently experienced the remarkable contributions of women across all facets of national development, frequently overcoming significant social and structural challenges,” Patil noted, adding that this law formally acknowledges their vast potential and institutionalizes avenues for their leadership within the highest levels of governance.

“It signifies a decisive step towards rectifying historical disparities and fostering a more just and equitable society,” she emphasized.

The esteemed Congress leader remarked that the enactment of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam will convey a “clear and powerful message” to the global community concerning “India’s steadfast commitment to gender justice and inclusive democracy.”
