New Delhi, Feb 22 (NationPress) On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to arrive in Meerut, located in western Uttar Pradesh, to unveil and dedicate a multitude of significant infrastructure initiatives totaling approximately Rs 12,930 crore. These projects are designed to enhance regional connectivity and improve urban mobility within the National Capital Region (NCR).

During his visit, the Prime Minister will officially launch the Meerut Metro and the Namo Bharat train at the Shatabdi Nagar Namo Bharat Station around 12:30 PM. Following this, he will experience a Metro journey to the Meerut South Station before addressing the public at approximately 1 PM, as stated in an official announcement.

A prominent feature of this visit will be the dedication of the complete 82-km Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat Corridor—marking India’s inaugural Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS). The Prime Minister will also inaugurate the remaining operational segments, which include the 5-km stretch from Sarai Kale Khan to New Ashok Nagar in Delhi and the 21-km stretch from Meerut South to Modipuram in Uttar Pradesh.

Engineered for speeds reaching 180 kmph, the Namo Bharat system is anticipated to drastically reduce travel times between Delhi and key urban areas such as Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Modinagar, and Meerut.

The Sarai Kale Khan station, the starting point of the corridor, has been developed as a major multimodal hub, connecting Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station, the Delhi Metro’s Pink Line, Veer Haqeeqat Rai ISBT, and Ring Road. Additionally, three more stations—Shatabdi Nagar, Begumpul, and Modipuram—will also be inaugurated in Meerut.

Moreover, the Prime Minister will launch the Meerut Metro services between Meerut South and Modipuram. In a pioneering effort in India, this Metro will run on the same infrastructure as the Namo Bharat RRTS. With a peak operational speed of approximately 120 kmph, it will become the fastest Metro system in the country, completing the route in around 30 minutes with all scheduled stops.

Officials stated that the integrated operation of regional rapid transit and urban Metro services on shared infrastructure establishes a new standard for multimodal public transportation. These projects are projected to alleviate road traffic congestion, minimize vehicular emissions, and facilitate faster, more sustainable mobility throughout the region.

These initiatives are part of the government’s wider goal to modernize public transport and improve the quality of life through efficient, environmentally-friendly infrastructure.

Point of View

This development reflects the government's commitment to enhancing public transport and ensuring sustainable urban mobility.
