Govind Sahani Kicks Off Men's National Boxing Championship with a Victory

Bareilly, January 8 (NationPress) - Govind Sahani, who clinched a silver medal at the 2023 Strandja Memorial International Boxing Tournament and is part of the Indian team competing in the 2023 Men’s World Boxing Championships, kicked off his journey at the Elite Men’s National Boxing Championship with a significant victory against Mohammad Aarif from Jammu & Kashmir on the first day of the event here on Tuesday.

Nearly 300 boxers are vying for dominance in this championship, representing their respective state units, which is organized by the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) in collaboration with the Uttar Pradesh Boxing Association.

The opening day showcased a series of exciting bouts that set a competitive tone. Devendra Solanki from Rajasthan began the tournament impressively by defeating Donald Winston Janumala in the flyweight (47-50 kg) category. In the bantamweight (50-55 kg) division, Badal from Himachal Pradesh triumphed over Lalhruaitluanga from Mizoram.

In the ring, the lightweight category showcased Nitesh Chawan from Goa, who dominated Mohamed Athif from Kerala with a commanding 5-0 victory, while Ito Ado from Arunachal secured a tightly contested win against Himanshu Singh. In the Welterweight (60-65 kg) category, Bhanu Prakash overcame Ashish, and notable victories were also seen in the (70-75 kg) weight class from Nikhil Dubey and Arshpreet Singh Bhatti.

Each team, representing their respective states, consists of up to ten boxers competing in matches structured according to the World Boxing Technical & Competition Rules, featuring three rounds of three minutes each with one-minute rest intervals. A 10-point must scoring system has been implemented throughout the championship.

The SSCB (Services) team entered the tournament as the two-time defending champions, having secured victories in the sixth and seventh editions of the championship.
