Why is the Trinamool Congress Celebrating 'Samhati Diwas'?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Dec 6 (NationPress) The Trinamool Congress commemorated 'Samhati Diwas' (Unity Day) throughout West Bengal on Saturday, organizing rallies and public gatherings aimed at fostering communal harmony.
Prominent leaders from the Trinamool Congress rallied at Mayo Road in Kolkata, vocally criticizing opposition figures for their attempts to incite religious fanaticism.
Without naming specific individuals, senior leader and State Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim remarked that certain traitors within the party are trying to create divisions among the populace based on religious beliefs.
"In West Bengal, individuals are being coerced in the name of temples and mosques. The residents of Bengal reject religious fanaticism. However, society must be protected from those attempting to sway people through religion. Unity is paramount. Many nations have regressed due to religious fanaticism, while India has advanced due to secularism," Hakim stated.
This statement indirectly pointed to suspended Trinamool Congress member Humayun Kabir, who laid the foundation stone for the Babri Masjid in Murshidabad district's Beldanga, contrary to the party's wishes.
"This is the Bengal of Kazi Nazrul Islam. Here, brotherhood and amity flourish among Hindus and Muslims. We do not discriminate based on religious beliefs. Yet, there are traitors who deceive both the people and the party. Such individuals will not find support in Bengal. This land has always championed secularism and communal harmony," Hakim, who also serves as the Kolkata Mayor, asserted.
State Minister Shashi Panja, party MP Kalyan Banerjee, and others participated in the public meeting, directing their criticism towards the Bharatiya Janata Party for polarizing the population of West Bengal during the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process of the state's electoral rolls, especially with the 2026 state Assembly elections approaching.
